Lake Bonney is one of South Australia’s largest permanent freshwater lakes and is about 7km long and 3.5km wide. It is fed and drained by the Murray River via Chambers Creek. The lake makes for a stunning backdrop during sunset, especially with its dead river gums, old jetty ruins and structures on the water. It is only about 220km north-east of Adelaide.

A wonderful walk around the town or for the adventurous a walk around the lake is a great experience to witness the diverse ecosystem. Don’t forget your camera, those dead red river gums are a photographers delight, if you are like me, you will have hours of endless fun.
Like all towns along the Murray River, we have all suffered a lot of heartache and damage from the recent flooding. A lot of the campsites have not been opened up as yet as they need time to recover and regenerate.
Take note of the water level mark on the dead red river gums.

We enjoyed a very relaxing 3 nights here, we found it extremely quiet and people very friendly. We enjoyed lunch and coffee at The Lakes Bakery Cafe on the lake which is across from the foreshore on Dean Drive, Barmera.

We took the opportunity to test out our Kmart induction cooker, it works an absolute treat. We enjoyed our meal that night with one of our favourite bottles of Shingleback, The Gate.

We even attempted to walk around the lake however, on the day we chose to do the walk it was unseasonably hot, we walked quite a few kilometres, but the suggestion of a beer and a shady tree won us over.
